As a coach with Three Bridges Cricket Club, I had the privilege of contributing to their success during a remarkable period. In 2016, under the leadership of captain Sohail Syed, we prepared for and won the Sussex Cricket T20 Cup. I was invited back in 2017, and together with Sohail and the dedicated team, we successfully retained the title. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of these achievements and for the collaboration with Sohail and the entire squad.
Seven years and a pandemic later, I was contracted to be the club's inaugural club coach. As club coach my role focuses on preparing all senior teams at training with a particular emphasis on developing junior cricketers transitioning into senior cricket across the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teams.
My first season as club coach could not have gone much better as three out of the four senior teams secured promotion with the 2nd X1 doing so as champions while the 1st team finished 3rd in the ECB Premier League and have booked a place in the Sussex T20 final at Hove. In addition, the club's Sussex Slam T20 team, the Titans, won their cup final. This season has highlighted the vital contributions and ongoing development of the club’s youth cricketers in senior cricket.
In the spring of 2024, I rejoined Three Bridges Cricket Club as the coach and encountered a remarkable story of resilience and hope. Among the dedicated players was Mohammad Asif, or Mo, a young Afghan asylum seeker with a dream to improve his cricket skills and build a better life.
Mo’s journey from Afghanistan to the UK was nothing short of harrowing, involving a perilous trek through multiple countries and numerous hardships. Despite these challenges, his dedication to cricket and his commitment to training were truly inspiring. Under my coaching, Mo delivered outstanding performances, including a match-winning 43 not out from 22 balls, with five fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 195.45, clinching the Sussex Slam T20 final with a six off the last ball. He also scored 50 not out in the semi-final, off 25 balls, with three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 200.
Mo’s enthusiasm and drive led me to offer him one-on-one coaching, and he also played a key role in trialling our new Stance Beam Striker for batting metrics.
Mo initially aspired to play for the 2nd XI, and with the coaching and support from Chambers Coaching, he quickly realised his ambition. He is now a player for the 2nd team, a testament to his hard work and dedication. Supporting Mo has highlighted the transformative power of community and the positive impact of sport in overcoming challenges. It’s been a privilege to witness his progress and contribute to his journey.
Between 2020 and 2023, Chambers Coaching was contracted to coach and develop local female cricketers, initially at South Nutfield Cricket Club and later at Horley Cricket Club.
Working closely with Horley CC’s women’s club captain, Charlotte Gouldsborough, Chambers Coaching focused on enhancing teamwork, technical and tactical skills, and mental performance. Notably, our work with Horley CC included developing a junior cricketer who successfully secured a place in the Sussex talent pathway.
A player survey praised the overall quality of coaching as excellent, highlighting well-structured and organised sessions, effective drills for improving performance, and clear, understandable instructions and feedback. The coach was commended for creating a positive learning environment and being approachable for discussing any issues or concerns.
